United States, formally denoted as, the United States of America, is a republic country in North America. In terms of population and land area, the United States is the world's third biggest country. It is made up of 50 states and one federal district. The capital of the United States is Washington, D.C., while New York is its largest city.

Climate

The climate of the United States ranges from the tropical rain forest of Hawaii and the tropical savanna of S Florida (home of the Everglades) to the subarctic and tundra climates of Alaska. The humid subtropical climate of the Southeast United States and the humid continental climate of the Northeast United States are located east of the 100th meridian (the conventional dividing line between dry and humid climates). Both of these areas have extensive woods. The steppe climate and Great Plains grasslands are located west of the 100th meridian; trees can be found along with the water systems.

The deserts of the basin and range province are located in the southwest United States, and they have the hottest and driest areas in the country.

Population

More than 79 per cent of the population in the United States is urban, and the vast majority of the residents are of European heritage. According to the United States Census Bureau, Hispanics accounted for 12.5 per cent of the population in 2000, accounting for 35,305,818 persons; this figure includes people of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, and many other backgrounds (who may be of any race). Although an extra 0.6 per cent of the population was of African-American heritage, the African-American population totalled 34,658,190, or 12.3 per cent.

      Economy

The United States has enormous mineral and agricultural resources. Although the country was nearly self-sufficient in the past, rising demand, particularly for energy, has kept it dependent on some imports. Despite this, it is the world's largest generator of both electrical and nuclear energy. Aircraft, motor cars and components, food, iron and steel products, electric and electronic equipment, industrial and power-generating machinery, organic chemicals, transistors, telecommunications equipment, medicines, and consumer items are among the major US exports. Ores and metal scraps, gasoline and petroleum products, machinery, transportation equipment (particularly vehicles), food, clothes, computers, and paper and paper products are among the most important imports. The United States' biggest trading partners include Canada (with which it has the world's largest bilateral trade relationship), Mexico, China, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, and South Korea.

        Government

The United States government is a federal republic established by the Constitution of the United States, which was enacted by the Constitutional Convention in 1787. The federal government and the state governments have separate authorities. The federal government is divided into three branches: executive, legislative, and judiciary. The President has executive power, as does the Vice President in the case of the President’s incapacity. The legislative branch of the United States is bicameral, consisting of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The federal courts are led by the United States Supreme Court. Members of Congress are chosen by universal suffrage.

        Religion/Education

There is religious freedom in the United States, and the overwhelming majority of Americans are Christians. In turn, the majority of Christians are Protestants, but of many denominations. The largest single Christian group embraces members (some 61 million in 1999) of the Roman Catholic Church; the Orthodox Eastern Church. In addition, roughly 2.5% of Americans adhere to Judaism, and some 1%–2% are Muslims. Education in the United States is administered chiefly by the states. Each of the 50 states has a free and public primary and secondary school system. There are more than 3,500 institutions of higher learning, both privately supported and state supported (see separate articles on individual colleges and universities) in the US.
