The United Kingdom is made up of four countries united by a single monarchy and administration. England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are the countries in question. Each country has its own culture and atmosphere. Northern Ireland is separate from England, Wales, and Scotland, while sharing a border with the Republic of Ireland.

Geography

Great Britain (England, Wales, and Scotland) and Northern Ireland make up the United Kingdom, which is twice the size of New York State. The granite Cheviot Hills separate England from Scotland on the north, while the Pennine series of uplands stretches south through the middle of England, reaching its highest point in the Lake District in the northwest. The Cambrian Mountains run along the western border of Wales, an area of high hills and valleys, while the Cotswolds, a range of hills in Gloucestershire, expand into the adjacent shires.

The Thames, Humber, Tees, and Tyne are all important rivers that run into the North Sea. The Severn and Wye rivers meet in the west and flow into the Severn Estuary.

      Government

The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy, with a queen and two chambers of parliament: the House of Lords, which has 574 life peers, 92 hereditary peers, and 26 bishops, and the House of Commons, which has 651 members who were elected by the people. Parliament has supreme legislative authority and sits for five years unless dissolved earlier. The union between England and Wales, begun in 1284 with the Statute of Rhuddlan, was not formalised until 1536 with an Act of Union; England and Scotland agreed to permanently join as Great Britain in another Act of Union in 1707; and the legislative union of Great Britain and Ireland was implemented in 1801, with the Act of Union.

      Living Standards

The United Kingdom has usually high living standards. Environmental quality, community, health condition, jobs, and learning are all above average in the OECD Better Life Index. Employees, on the other hand, work longer hours than the OECD average.

      Education

While literacy levels in the UK are typically excellent, a number of recent investigations have indicated that more people struggle to read and write than previously assumed.

Literacy Trust, a British group, discovered that 7.1 million adults in England, as well as 931,00 in Scotland, 216,000 in Wales, and 550,000 in Northern Ireland, had extremely low literacy abilities.

Primary education (for children aged four to eleven), secondary education (for children aged eleven to sixteen), and higher or further education make up the UK educational system. It is a legal necessity for children to attend school until they reach the age of eighteen.

        Weather

The United Kingdom is known for its rain, but you might be shocked to learn of the extreme heat that can be found there. Despite its tiny size, the island has a wide range of climates; the north and west receive more rain, while the south-east is often warmer and drier.

        Freedom & Rights

On the Cato Human Freedom Index, the United Kingdom is tied for a seventeenth position with Ireland in terms of freedom. While it is one of the top countries, it has slowly declined in the rankings over the last decade, with worse ratings in rule of law, religious freedom, and women’s safety.

Women’s rights in the United Kingdom are usually excellent, and gender discrimination is banned. Nonetheless, UK corporations have been shown to pay women less than males, there are fewer women in positions of authority, and many women face bias and limitations as a result of taking time off work to have children.
