Australia is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy that adheres to the Westminster system of governance and law, which it acquired from the British. Canberra is the federal government's headquarters.

 There are two major political parties and numerous minor parties, and each state and territory has its own administration. Incumbent British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, is also the Australian monarch. The Governor-General represents her in Australia.

Economy

Australia is the 13th largest free-market economy in the world. Despite the current financial crisis, economic growth has been consistent since 1992 and is expected to continue for the next five years. The service industry is the largest sector, accounting for 71 percent of GDP in 2008.

Australia's economic prosperity has always survived on its enormous agricultural and mineral resources. While these industries continue to be vital, Australia is rapidly becoming a knowledge-based economy powered by information and communications technology.

 Foreigners

More than six million people have come to Australia since the end of World War II. It boasts one of the world's most ethnically diversified societies. The climate, good quality of life, and solid economy attract all people. More than a quarter of Australians are of foreign origin. Italian, Greek, Cantonese, and Arabic are the most frequently spoken languages after English.

 Australia has an efficient migration system. The government intends to shift immigration away from major cities to remote locations requiring certain talents. The Department of Immigration and Citizenship oversees immigration.
